How Aqualyx® Works: A common misconception is that fat-dissolving injections simply shrink your fat cells. In reality, the treatment permanently alters your regional anatomy at a cellular level.
The Aqualyx® formulation is a modified compound from the deoxycholic acid family—a naturally occurring secondary bile acid that your body naturally produces to break down and emulsify dietary fats.
When precisely micro-injected directly into the subcutaneous fat layer, the solution initiates a multi-stage clearance process:

When precisely injected into the subcutaneous adipose tissue, Aqualyx® disrupts the phospholipid bilayer of the fat cell membranes. This process, known as deoxycholate-induced adipocytolysis, causes the targeted fat cells to rupture and dissolve. Unlike natural weight loss, where fat cells simply shrink in size, Aqualyx® destroys the cells entirely so they cannot store fat again.

Swelling is not an adverse side effect of Aqualyx®; it is a mandatory clinical indicator that the treatment is actively working. When the fat cell membranes rupture, it triggers a controlled, localized inflammatory response within the subcutaneous tissue. This swelling peaks within the first 24 to 48 hours post-injection, particularly when treating the submental (double chin) area. Because your body relies on a gradual, macrophage-mediated clearance pathway to safely process and excrete the destroyed fat cells through the lymphatic system, results unfold progressively. While a structural change can be seen after a single session, a standard clinical course typically requires 2 to 5 sessions, spaced exactly 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the thickness of the local fat layer. Your final sculpted contours take 6 to 8 weeks following your last treatment session to mature completely, revealing a tighter, more defined silhouette.

Yes, the elimination of the targeted fat cells is chemically permanent. Once an adipocyte (fat cell) has been ruptured and cleared by your lymphatic system, it cannot grow back or regenerate. However, the remaining, untreated fat cells in the surrounding tissue still maintain the capacity to expand if you enter a significant caloric surplus. To permanently preserve your newly sculpted contours, it is essential to maintain a stable weight through a balanced diet and regular physical exercise.
