Marionette Lines in Nottingham
YOUR BEAUTY DOCTOR - NOTTINGHAM
Lines below the corners of your mouth can make your resting expression look different from how you feel. You may notice a deeper shadow, a downward turn at the corners or changes in the surrounding lower face.
At Your Beauty Doctor in Mapperley, Nottingham, we assess the area as a whole. We will help you understand what has changed and whether a subtle improvement is possible without adding unnecessary fullness.
You do not need to change the way you look to ask for advice!
What are Marionette Lines?
Marionette lines run downwards from the mouth corners towards the chin. They are sometimes called mouth-to-chin lines or puppet lines. They can appear as a fine crease, a deeper fold or a shadow beside the chin.
They are different from smile lines beside the nose. A downturned mouth corner can also involve muscle activity, while a jowl is tissue sitting lower along the jawline. These concerns may overlap, but one treatment does not necessarily address them all.
What causes Marionette lines?
CAUSES
Changes in lower face support
Ageing can alter facial fat, skin and underlying support. A dip beside the chin can make the mouth-to-chin transition appear more pronounced.
Skin Laxity
Less elastic skin and changes in the position of soft tissues may add to the fold. Where sagging is the main cause, simply filling a line may not give the desired result.
Anatomy and Movement
Your natural chin shape, mouth position and facial movement influence the pattern. The appearance can differ on each side. Dental support may also be relevant, particularly if you have noticed a change after dental problems or treatment.
Can Home care Help?
WHAT MAY HELP
Moisturising and sun protection can support skin quality, but they cannot reliably reposition a fold or restore lost support. Massage and facial exercises should not be relied on to remove marionette lines.
ITS LIMITATIONS
If changes coincide with dental issues, speak to your dentist. Sudden mouth drooping or facial weakness is not an ordinary aesthetic concern and needs urgent medical assessment rather than a cosmetic appointment.
Marionette Lines Treatment Options in Nottingham
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Selected dermal filler
For suitable patients, filler may soften a crease or support selected areas beside the mouth and chin. The aim is to improve the transition, not fill every shadow or make the lower face heavier.
Sofwave
If loose skin is part of the concern, a skin-tightening assessment may be appropriate. Sofwave can be discussed for suitable laxity, but it is not an immediate filler substitute or a surgical lift.
Chin and Jawline Filler
Where a structural dip or reduced chin support contributes, carefully selected contouring may be considered. It does not remove excess skin or lift a substantial jowl.
Choosing the right approach for you
We assess the mouth corners, chin, jawline and skin alongside the crease itself. A line associated with a small volume deficit may need different advice from a fold created mainly by sagging.
We also consider how your face moves and whether previous filler is present. A staged plan can help avoid overfilling. If the available non-surgical options cannot deliver the change you want, we will explain their limits rather than promise a lift they cannot provide.
DOCTOR’S ADVICE
Dr. Jess Advice on Nasolabial Folds
“It is understandable to focus on the line beside the mouth, but the surrounding area often tells us more. The chin, the jawline and the position of the mouth corners all influence the shadow. Filling the deepest-looking point is not always the best starting point. The assessment should distinguish lost support from loose skin and look at both sides, because natural asymmetry is common. Any improvement should keep the lower face feeling proportionate when you speak and smile. It is also important to be realistic if the fold is mainly caused by significant sagging. A little softening may be achievable, but a non-surgical plan should not be presented as the same thing as a facelift.“

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your patient journey at Your Beauty Doctor
STEP 1
Understanding the lower face
We discuss when the folds became more noticeable and examine the cheeks, nose-to-mouth transition and skin. Previous filler and your medical history are reviewed.
STEP 2
Setting a realistic goal
We explain what may soften the fold and what will remain. Risks, alternatives and costs are discussed, including reasons to recommend a limited approach.
Treatment and Aftercare
STEP 3
Your preparation and recovery depend on the chosen option. We provide specific aftercare and explain how to seek help with unexpected symptoms.
STEP 4
Reviewing Balance
We allow the result to develop or settle before reassessing. Further treatment is considered in relation to facial balance, not simply whether a line remains.
What results can you expect?
A suitable plan may soften the mouth-to-chin shadow or improve the contour around it. The mouth still needs to move naturally, and some fold or asymmetry may remain.
Filler and skin-tightening options have different timelines. None guarantees correction of significant sagging. Injectable treatments can cause swelling and bruising; filler also carries risks including lumps, infection and rare serious blood-vessel complications. These should be discussed before consent.

Frequently Asked Questions about Marionette Lines
Left: Before / Right: After
-
They can contribute to that appearance, but mouth position and muscle activity may also play a role. The crease alone does not explain every downturned corner.
-
No. Marionette lines sit below the mouth corners. Jowls are a change in the tissue contour along the jawline, although they can occur together.
-
Differences in anatomy, support and movement can cause asymmetry. The plan should reflect those differences rather than assume identical treatment on both sides.
-
It can support or soften selected contours, but it does not remove excess skin or reliably reposition substantial sagging. A tightening or specialist surgical assessment may be more appropriate.
-
Often the assessment can focus on the lower-face support rather than lip volume. We will explain if a proposed approach could affect the mouth area.
-
Existing product and any previous complications need assessing before more is added. Bring details of the earlier treatment if you have them.
-
It depends on the procedure. Temporary tenderness, swelling or bruising may occur with injections; skin-tightening procedures have their own recovery and risks.
-
Possibly, depending on your chosen approach and response. Maintenance should follow reassessment and your preferences rather than an automatic schedule.
