Sagging Neck
YOUR BEAUTY DOCTOR - NOTTINGHAM
The skin on your neck can start to look looser even when the rest of your face feels much the same. You might notice fine creases, folds beneath the chin or a softer transition into the jawline.
At Your Beauty Doctor in Mapperley, Nottingham, we look at what is contributing to that change. We can explain whether the main concern is skin texture, laxity or fullness, and what a realistic treatment plan could offer.
You do not need to change the way you look to ask for advice!
Understanding Sagging Neck
A sagging neck describes loose skin or soft tissue that changes the contour between the jaw and chest. It can appear as thin, crepey skin, a fold beneath the chin or a less defined neck angle.
Neck laxity is different from a double chin caused mainly by fat. Horizontal neck lines and visible muscle bands are also distinct features, although several changes may occur together. Identifying which one bothers you most helps guide the assessment.
What causes Sagging Neck?
CAUSES
Changes in Elasticity
Collagen and elastin help skin maintain its strength and flexibility. Changes with age can reduce that support, making the neck look less firm. The amount of change varies between people.
Sun exposure and Skin Quality
The neck is often exposed to sunlight but can be missed when applying sun protection. Cumulative UV damage can contribute to uneven texture and loss of elasticity.
Weight Changes
Weight loss can leave skin looking looser, while fat beneath the chin can add fullness. Your chin shape and the position of deeper tissues also affect the outline. A skin treatment cannot change all of these factors.
Can Home care Help?
WHAT MAY HELP
A gentle moisturiser can make dry neck skin feel more comfortable and soften the appearance of dehydration lines. Apply suitable broad-spectrum sun protection to exposed skin, including the neck and chest.
ITS LIMITATIONS
Creams and massage cannot reliably remove a hanging fold or reproduce surgical lifting. If the change includes a new lump, persistent swelling, pain or difficulty swallowing, seek medical assessment before considering an aesthetic appointment.
Treatment Options in Nottingham
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Sofwave
Sofwave uses ultrasound energy and may be considered for suitable neck laxity. Changes develop gradually. It does not remove a substantial excess of skin, and it should not be presented as equivalent to a surgical neck lift.
Profhilo
Where fine crepiness and hydration are important, Profhilo may be discussed for the neck. It is a skin-quality option rather than a way to remove loose tissue or correct every neck band.
SkinTyte
SkinTyte uses infrared energy to support improvement in skin firmness. It may suit selected mild to moderate laxity and commonly involves a course. A tightening approach has a different purpose from reducing fat beneath the chin.
Choosing the right approach for you
We examine the neck at rest and during movement, including the jawline, skin thickness, folds and any fullness beneath the chin. We also ask about weight changes and previous procedures.
A person with fine, crepey skin may need different advice from someone with a large fold. If the desired change exceeds what non-surgical treatment can deliver, we explain that clearly. A specialist surgical opinion or no procedure may be more appropriate.
DOCTOR’S ADVICE
Dr. Jess Advice on Sagging Neck
“The neck needs its own assessment. A photograph may show a shadow under the chin, but it does not tell us whether the cause is loose skin, fat, muscle bands or the shape of the lower face. I would first ask which change you want to improve and how much difference you are hoping for. Skin-quality treatments and tightening treatments have different roles, and neither should be sold as removing a large amount of excess skin. A gradual improvement in firmness may be worthwhile for some patients. For others, the likely benefit is too small to justify treatment. Understanding that before booking a course is an important part of a useful consultation.“

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your patient journey at Your Beauty Doctor
STEP 1
Assessing the neck
We discuss the changes you have noticed and review your medical history, skin, neck contour and previous treatment.
STEP 2
A realistic Plan
We explain the role of skin quality, tightening or another assessment, including likely improvement, risks and costs.
Treatment and Aftercare
STEP 3
If you proceed, we provide preparation and recovery advice for the chosen procedure. Energy-based treatments and injections have different aftercare.
STEP 4
Reviewing the change
We reassess after the appropriate development period. Further treatment depends on progress and your preferences.
What results can you expect?
An appropriate plan may improve firmness or fine texture. A deeper fold or band may remain, and the result will depend on the cause and degree of laxity.
Tightening changes usually develop over weeks to months. Temporary redness, tenderness or swelling can occur, and energy-based procedures can cause skin injury. Injectable options have their own risks, including bruising and infection. We discuss these before you decide, along with the possibility of limited improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sagging Neck
Top Before / Bottom: After
-
Yes. Anatomy, weight changes and skin characteristics can contribute before more obvious age-related changes occur.
-
They do not reliably remove excess skin. Muscle activity and skin laxity are different issues, so exercises should not be assumed to reproduce a clinical or surgical result.
-
No. A double chin usually describes fullness beneath the chin. Fat, skin laxity and facial proportions can each contribute, and more than one may be present.
-
No. It may be considered for selected skin-quality concerns, but it does not remove loose tissue or provide the same structural change as surgery.
-
Sofwave uses ultrasound; SkinTyte uses infrared energy. The choice depends on your assessment, treatment area and likely benefit, rather than one device being right for everyone.
-
Not necessarily. Established horizontal creases may remain even if skin quality or firmness improves. We discuss them separately during assessment.
-
Possibly. The timing, weight stability and amount of loose skin matter. A large excess may need a specialist opinion rather than repeated non-surgical sessions.
-
The procedure, area and number of sessions affect the cost. You receive a personalised estimate after assessment, including any proposed course or review.
