Lip lines in Nottingham
YOUR BEAUTY DOCTOR - NOTTINGHAM
Fine lines above the top lip can become more noticeable when you speak, smile or apply lipstick. Often called smoker’s lines, they also occur in people who have never smoked.
At Your Beauty Doctor in Mapperley, Nottingham, we look at the skin around your mouth as well as your lips. A subtle refresh starts with understanding whether the main concern is texture, lost support or both.
You do not need to change the way you look to ask for advice!
What are lip lines?
Lip lines are small vertical creases in the skin around the mouth, particularly above the upper lip. The clinical term is perioral lines. They may appear during pursing or remain visible when the mouth is relaxed.
They are different from nasolabial folds beside the nose and marionette lines below the mouth corners. They also differ from a loss of volume inside the lip itself, although the concerns can develop together.
What causes lip lines?
CAUSES
Movements around the mouth
Speaking, drinking and pursing the lips repeatedly fold the surrounding skin. These are normal movements, and the pattern of lines varies with anatomy.
Changes in Skin and Lip Support
With ageing, the skin becomes less elastic and the lip border can lose definition. This can make lines more visible and allow lipstick to settle into the creases.
Environmental Factors
Sun exposure and smoking can contribute to changes in the skin. Dryness may highlight finer lines, but it is not the only explanation. The name smoker’s lines should not be taken as a diagnosis of their cause.
Can Home care Help?
WHAT MAY HELP
A gentle moisturiser, lip care and appropriate sun protection can support the area. Avoid persistent irritation from fragranced products or over-exfoliation. If you smoke, stopping benefits your wider health as well as your skin.
ITS LIMITATIONS
Skincare can improve dryness but does not reliably replace lost volume or remove established vertical creases. Persistent cracking, soreness, ulceration or a changing patch on the lip should be assessed medically before cosmetic treatment.
Lip Lines Treatment Options in Nottingham
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Carefully selected dermal filler
The clinic offers filler to soften suitable perioral lines and restore aspects of the lip border. Treatment around the mouth does not have to mean making the lips noticeably larger. Product choice and placement depend on the anatomy, and too much volume can look heavy.
Personalised Skincare
A routine directed at dryness, sun protection and skin tolerance can support the area. It may be appropriate as a starting point or alongside a procedure.
Skinpen Microneedling
SkinPen may be considered where fine surface texture is a significant part of the concern. Changes develop gradually and it will not replace missing lip volume or guarantee removal of every crease.
Choosing the right approach for you
We assess your mouth at rest and while speaking or pursing. We consider the depth of the lines, lip-border support, skin texture and any previous filler.
If lost support is important, a small structural change may be discussed. If the main concern is skin texture, adding volume alone may not help. We avoid assuming that a fuller lip is the answer to every line and explain when a staged plan would be more appropriate.
DOCTOR’S ADVICE
Dr. Jess Advice on Lip Lines
“Lip lines need a different conversation from simply wanting fuller lips. It is useful to look at the skin above the lip, the border and the way your mouth moves. Sometimes the concern is a fine surface crease; sometimes there is less support beneath it. Adding more volume without understanding that difference can give a result the patient never wanted. A considered plan may involve skin care, a gradual skin-quality approach or carefully selected filler, but none is right for everyone. Your lips should still look and move comfortably. It is also important to mention any previous filler and any persistent soreness before deciding on a procedure.“

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your patient journey at Your Beauty Doctor
STEP 1
Assessing the mouth area
We discuss lipstick bleeding, fine creases or changes to the lip border, and review your skin, medical history, cold sores and previous filler.
STEP 2
Your priorities
Tell us if your priority is softer lines rather than larger lips. We explain what each option can achieve, its risks and the cost.
Treatment and Aftercare
STEP 3
Your chosen procedure determines the preparation and aftercare. Temporary swelling, redness or bruising may occur, so plan around important events.
STEP 4
Review and maintenance
We allow the area to settle before judging the result. Further treatment is considered only after review, rather than adding product automatically.
What results can you expect?
A suitable approach may soften vertical creases, improve texture or restore some lip-border definition. Deeper lines can remain, and complete removal is not a realistic promise.
Filler can change the contour immediately, but swelling affects the early appearance. Skin-quality improvements are more gradual. Maintenance depends on the option and your response. Filler risks include lumps, infection and rare blood-vessel complications that can cause tissue damage or affect vision; these form part of the consent discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lip Lines
Left: Before / Right: After
-
Yes. Ageing, repeated movement, anatomy and sun exposure can contribute. The common name does not mean smoking caused your lines.
-
Not necessarily. The plan can focus on the skin and border rather than overall volume, but any filler-related change needs discussing before treatment.
-
No. Lip lines are fine vertical creases near the lip border. Marionette lines run down from the mouth corners towards the chin.
-
It may improve if the creases or border changes contributing to it are softened. The outcome depends on the cause and cannot be guaranteed.
-
Some products may be suitable, but the area can become irritated. Ask for advice on your skin and the specific product rather than applying strong formulas indiscriminately.
-
Tell us what product was used, when and where, if known. Existing filler, migration or swelling may change the advice and the timing of further treatment.
-
Yes. A history of cold sores matters when planning procedures around the mouth. Your clinician can advise on any precautions needed.
-
It varies with the procedure. Temporary redness, swelling or bruising can affect the appearance, so leave enough time before a special occasion and follow the clinic’s advice.
