Profhilo and polynucleotides are two of the treatments I am asked about most when someone wants better skin quality without changing the shape of their face. They are often placed in the same 'skin booster' conversation, but they are not the same treatment and they do not do exactly the same job.

If your main question is 'Which one is better?', the answer is usually: better for what? Hydration, thin under-eye skin, general crepiness, texture and early laxity are different concerns, even when they all sit under the broad heading of skin quality.

Profhilo vs Polynucleotides at a glance

Profhilo is a hyaluronic acid-based injectable designed to spread through the tissue and support hydration and bio-remodelling. Polynucleotides are chains of nucleotides, the building blocks of DNA and RNA, used to support skin repair and regenerative activity.

Neither is a traditional structural dermal filler. They are not used to sculpt cheekbones, project a chin or replace lost facial volume in the same way a filler would.

What are polynucleotides best known for?

Polynucleotides are used when the goal is to improve skin quality through a regenerative approach. At YBD we use them for concerns such as thin, crepey skin, fine lines and areas where skin quality needs more than hydration alone.

They are particularly popular around the under-eye area because this skin is thin and delicate, and because the concern is often a mixture of texture, fine lines, darkness and loss of resilience rather than simply a lack of volume.

Which is better for dry or dehydrated skin?

If hydration is the dominant concern, Profhilo may be the more obvious treatment to discuss because hyaluronic acid is strongly associated with water retention within the skin.

That does not mean every dry complexion needs an injectable. A good skincare routine, barrier support and an assessment of why the skin feels dry are still important.

Which is better for crepey or thinning skin?

For thin or crepey skin, I am less interested in choosing a treatment based on the most famous brand and more interested in where the problem is and how the skin behaves.

Polynucleotides can be a very useful option in delicate areas such as the under eyes. Profhilo can also be helpful where broader facial or neck skin quality, hydration and laxity are part of the concern. Sometimes the answer is neither, and another collagen-stimulating approach may suit the skin better.

Profhilo or polynucleotides for the under eyes?

At YBD, polynucleotides are the option we more commonly discuss specifically for the under-eye area. That is because the treatment is used to support the quality of thin, delicate skin without relying on structural volume.

Under-eye concerns are not all the same, though. Hollowing, pigmentation, puffiness and crepey skin can look similar from a distance but need different approaches. If the problem is mainly structural hollowing, for example, a skin-quality injectable will not recreate the same support as filler.

Do Profhilo or polynucleotides add volume?

Not in the way a traditional dermal filler does. Profhilo and polynucleotides are chosen to improve skin quality rather than to sculpt or reshape facial features.

This distinction matters because patients sometimes ask for a 'skin booster' when what they really want is cheek support or correction of a deeper hollow. In that situation, the consultation may point us towards a different treatment altogether.

Can you combine Profhilo and polynucleotides?

They can sit within the same long-term skin plan, but more treatments do not automatically mean a better result. I prefer to identify the priority first and build from there.

What about Sunekos and other Skin boosters?

Profhilo and polynucleotides are not the only options for skin quality. YBD also offers Sunekos and other injectable and non-injectable treatments.

One simple way to think about Profhilo is as an injectable moisturiser. It is particularly useful when the concern is more generalised dehydration and is used to treat the mid to lower face or the neck. It is not used to treat the forehead or under-eye area.

Sunekos can be used more widely across the full face, including the forehead and under eyes. If the concern is specifically the under-eye area and the choice is between Sunekos and Profhilo, Sunekos would be the appropriate option.

How I choose between them in consultation

The most useful question is not 'Which product is best?' It is 'What is my skin actually asking us to improve?' Once we know that, the choice becomes much clearer.
