Lip filler adds volume. A lip flip does not. Lip filler uses hyaluronic acid to add measured volume, refine the lip border or improve some asymmetry. A lip flip uses a small dose of anti-wrinkle injection to relax the muscle along the upper lip, so the lip rolls slightly outwards.
Thin lips, lip shape and vertical lip lines are different concerns. Which approach suits you, if either, depends on your anatomy and an assessment.
What Is Lip Filler?
Lip filler is a hyaluronic acid gel. At YBD, the lips are numbed with a prescription-strength topical cream, the fillers contain lidocaine, and the filler is placed in micro-droplets.
Swelling peaks in the first 24 to 48 hours, eases by days three to five, and the final result shows at around day 14. Results tend to last nine to 12 months, often longer. Avoid hot drinks, intense exercise and alcohol for the first 24 hours.
Swelling and mild bruising are normal. Filler can migrate above the lip, which is linked to overfilling, rapid injection or too thick a product. Filler also cannot make every lip shape achievable.
What Is a Lip Flip?
A lip flip involves small injections of an anti-wrinkle treatment into the muscle near the upper lip border. Relaxing those fibres lets the lip roll outwards, so it can look fuller without anything being added.
Published reviews report that effects often show within the first week and in some cases last three to four months.
Reported side effects include:
Temporary difficulty using a straw, whistling, spitting or saying some sounds.
Bruising, swelling, tenderness and mild asymmetry.
Most of these limitations settle within two to four weeks.
Anti-wrinkle injections are prescription-only medicines, so a lip flip can only be considered after a medical assessment. It is not suitable if your goal is more volume.
| Lip filler | Lip flip | |
|---|---|---|
| Treatment purpose | Volume, border definition, selected asymmetry | Lets the upper lip roll slightly outwards |
| Adds volume? | Yes | No |
| Change to lip appearance | Fuller, more defined lips | A little more upper lip visible |
| Suitability | Lips that have lost fullness, or selected shape concerns | A medical assessment decides; not for adding volume |
| Treatment experience | Numbing cream, micro-droplet injections, swelling for several days | A few small injections |
| Duration | Nine to 12 months, often longer | Reported as up to three to four months in some cases |
| Limitations and side effects | Swelling, bruising, migration if overfilled | Temporary effects on straws, whistling and some sounds; bruising, swelling, mild asymmetry |
Natural lip size is influenced by genetics and by how the lips relate to the teeth and facial structure. With age, changes in soft tissue and support can reduce fullness, flatten the lip border or make the lip seem to turn inwards.
There is no single ideal lip ratio. A conservative plan often suits better than a large increase, and adding more volume is not always the right approach. Dryness can make lips look less smooth without any loss of structure. Persistent soreness, cracking or a changing lesion needs medical care, not cosmetic treatment.
What If Your Concern Is Vertical Lip Lines?
Lines around the mouth come from repeated movement, as speaking, drinking and pursing the lips fold the skin. With age, the skin also becomes less elastic and the lip border can lose definition. Sun exposure and smoking contribute, and dryness makes fine lines more visible.
This is a different concern from lip volume. Adding volume inside the lips is not automatically the answer. Options include carefully selected filler for suitable lines, a skincare routine for dryness and sun protection, and SkinPen microneedling where fine texture is a major part of the concern. Microneedling does not replace lost lip volume and does not guarantee every crease will go.

Discussing Lip Concerns at Your Beauty Doctor
At our Mapperley clinic in Nottingham, I assess your lips, your facial proportions and your medical history, and we discuss what you want to change. I take a conservative approach to proportions. Booking a consultation doesn't mean you need treatment.
Lip filler adds volume and shape; a lip flip changes how the upper lip sits without adding volume. To work out which concern applies to you, book a personalised lip consultation at Your Beauty Doctor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a lip flip add volume to the lips?
No. A lip flip relaxes the muscle along the upper lip so the lip rolls slightly outwards. No product is added to the lip.
What is the difference between lip filler and a lip flip?
Lip filler adds hyaluronic acid volume and tends to last nine to 12 months. A lip flip uses a small dose of anti-wrinkle injection to change how the upper lip sits, and its reported effect is shorter.
Can lip filler improve vertical lines around the mouth?
Carefully selected filler can soften suitable lines around the mouth. These lines also involve movement, elasticity and dryness, so skincare or microneedling may be part of the plan.
What are the possible risks of lip filler and a lip flip?
Lip filler: swelling, bruising and migration if overfilled. Lip flip: temporary difficulty with straws, whistling and some sounds, plus bruising, swelling and mild asymmetry. Both need a medical assessment first.
How can I tell whether lip filler or a lip flip suits me?
Start with the concern: volume, shape or lines. An in-person assessment of your lips and proportions decides which approach, if any, is suitable.
